How an Active Social Life Improves Senior Health

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), loneliness and social isolation are linked to serious health conditions in older adults.  A report published in 2020 by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine indicated that social isolation was associated with about a 50 percent increased risk of developing dementia and other serious medical conditions.  Many older adults experience loneliness and social isolation due to several factors such as loss of loved ones and friends, living alone, chronic illness, and hearing loss.  Loneliness was also associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide.  Chronic loneliness and isolation can adversely affect mental, cognitive, and physical health as well as longevity.

Studies have shown that seniors with an active social life lead happier lives.  They experience a stronger sense of purpose and more fulfillment when they have opportunities for socialization with others.  According to the American Public Health Association, socialization improves mood, cognition, and memory recall.

Senior Living Communities Help

A major benefit of residing in an active senior living community is the availability of social interactions.  These activities and events should engage residents mentally and physically, as well as socially.  Some communities offer restaurant-style dining that affords residents the opportunity to interact with fellow residents and friends.  Onsite exercise and fitness programs enable seniors to maintain strength, flexibility, mobility, and endurance.  This improves balance and aids in fall prevention.  Group exercise classes can be fun and motivating for residents.  Some senior communities also provide transportation for local outings.  A number of surveys have indicated that residents in active senior living communities report improved quality of life and fewer feelings of loneliness than seniors living on their own.
